SCARLET'S LEGACY, October 2000 - 9 weeks old
NT Scarlet's Legacy
B.K.A. Legacy Born August 2, 2000. Our first born foal at Native Trails
This page is so we all share in the delightful years of Leg's growing. He is a mischievous
little guy. The purple halter you see on him was quite a challenge for the colt. Of
course, he thought the halter was something that wasn't supposed to be anywhere near his
face! He reared and reared and totally objected to that strange feeling around his head.
Gina Thomas recaps the desensitizing training she did with him here:
I got the bright idea after having had the halter on Legacy half dozen
time
and having him learning to lead a few times to let him out in the paddock to
graze with his halter. To get used to the weight of it and having something
on his head. I of course sat out there with Legacy (I do this ALOT anyway,
Legacy spoiled.....NAH not him!)

Anyway to get back to the story. I put his halter on and sat in the lawn
chair in his paddock... He of course is a very UP right necked fellow and
holds that head high alot. He seemed to get spooked at the tinkling of the
ring and buckle on the chin strap of his halter and then THREW a big fit
wanting to get it off. He got VERY ANGRY. If he reared once he reared 25 +
times. Nothing to do but stand and watch as was so mad and hope he did NOT
hurt himself. Well he ended up flipping over onto his back..... OF course
I have a heartattack! But he gets up and walks CALMLY then and did NOT hurt
himself thank goodness.

I checked him over. Had him walk with me a bit with his halter, whoa,
stand, walk, whoa, stand and so on. Then I took it off. HE BIT it he did
not like his halter. Well we went on and off with the halter and would not
let him bite it again.
A little later that afternoon I put his halter back on him when it was milk
time. He was fine. Then after he finished drinking we worked on with
on/off again. And we learned, NOT 100% of course being a colt he thinks he
can still try it, to not bite his halter. He stands good for halter on/off.
The next day we did some leading again........the pictures speak for
themselves. ;-) and we graze, run, buck, fart, rear in play with the halter
on so.....as best I can see no adverse effects.

I would like to remind folks:
DO NOT LEAVE halters on a while the horse is unattended.
