ANATOMY OF THE HORSE

ARTICLES:

As of February 26th, this is a brand new section to PENZANCE ... please be patient while we construct, build, learn and compose in order to share the most precise and correct information with you, the reader.

THE SKELETAL SYSTEM

In the following web pages you will find pictures and descriptions of the parts of the Horse's body from the inside. Why is it important to know this? Because how we work with the horse, ride with the horse and care for the horse affects every part of the body. We don't just ride on the *back* of the horse ... we ride on THE WHOLE HORSE ... every part of its body is being used from his soles to his poll and every part inside and outside when we ask our horse to perform for us. We must, as conscientious and caring horsemen, be aware of what we are asking our horses to do and whether or not we are asking it to execute a movement that is actually possible for them to render. We must also be aware of how OUR bodies affect the movements of the horse.

Riding is an art but it is also a science. In order to achieve ours and our horse's best performance, we must have a working knowledge of how we fit together. It is not necessary to memorize every bone and every muscle, but we do need to have a general idea so that we don't stress our horses.

Enjoy ... and don't stress yourself about this but please take note of the whole horse ... not just a piece of it, when working and caring for one.
