HOME STUDY CERTIFICATE COURSES

This course has been designed with the horse lover in mind who wants to enhance his or her basics in horse care and management. Whether you ride, don't ride, own, lease, or don't have a horse; no matter what kind of horse, what kind of riding -- the care and management of horses is the same everywhere. Only minor differences occur from region to region, country to country. All horses are basically the same, made the same way with all the same parts and they all branch from the same ancestors.

HORSE CARE & MANAGEMENT I
HOME STUDY CERTIFICATE COURSE:

  • SAFETY
This primary section will introduce the student how to safely and enjoyably work around and with horses.

  • BREEDS, TYPES AND BASIC CONFORMATION
Knowing the difference between breeds and types will enhance any equestrian's background of the horse. The conformation of the horse is imperative to the work we ask it to do. A basic introduction here will explore the differences between blemishes and unsoundness, the skeleton, muscular and parts of the horse as they relate to one another and to our riding discipline. We also discuss what to look for when purchasing or leasing a new horse.

  • PSYCHOLOGY & BEHAVIOR OF THE HORSE
Horses are horses and are motivated by very strong survival instincts. Learn to work WITH these instincts and how to strengthen the bonds between you and your horse and develop a steadfast partnership.

  • FEED & NUTRITION
Just as with humans, the equine's behavior and physiology is be affected by its intake of food. Learn how and why this happens and how to feed your horse according to its individual needs and requirements. Learn the differences between different types of grain and hay and discover the horse's nutritional needs.

  • HEALTH CARE
Domestic horses depend on humans to take proper care of their health needs. Learn what these requirements are and just why this topic is so important for a horse owner to know.

  • STABLE MANAGEMENT (2 PARTS)
A horse's environment affects its behavior as much as proper feed and nutrition. The proper stable management should never be overlooked when caring for horses. This course gives the student a good basic outline to follow whether he/she is caring for 2 horses or 42+ horses.

This Course can be ordered in its entirety or ordered in individual topics according to the student's interest. However, it is strongly recommended that the course be followed in sequence and no one section be ignored. All facets of horse care work together for the best of the horse. When working with horses, one must work with the "whole" horse and not just a piece in order to fully polish the relationship between horse and human.

Each section has required assignments and a review quiz. As you complete each section's homework and quiz, you will mail it to PENZANCE and it will be corrected, graded and returned to you. At the completion of all sections you will receive an intensive FINAL EXAM. All sections and FINAL EXAM must be satisfactorily completed in order to receive a CERTIFICATE.

Whether you are interested in this course merely to improve your Horse care and management skills or you are preparing for a career with horses, you'll find this information to be invaluable. Recommended for older teens and adults.
