"Devoted Companions"

I was raised in the horse country of Oakdale, California and started drawing horses as
soon as I figured out how to hold a pencil. However, in 1993 a blown disc in my neck
paralyzed my right arm. Surgery returned the use of my arm, but permanent damage was done
to the nerves which controlled fine motor control. Drawing was no long possible.
In late 1999, I was asked to draw a horse. The anguish at my loss has never really receded
and just to be asked to draw wrung out my heart. Initially I said "No," but
decided to give it one last try. To my amazement, enough of the damaged nerves had, over
the years, rejuvenated themselves. With work, I was able to come up with a reasonable
horse and with it, a determination to recapture what was lost.
My one and only resolution for the year 2000 was to draw, draw, draw.
"Devoted Companions" is a rendition of the horses of Walt Disney's
"Zorro" series from the 1950's. While "Starlight, Starbright" is my
picture of a mother's devotion. All of the proceeds that come from the sale of prints and
cards of "Starlight, Starbright" go to Starbright Foundation.
