The AraAppaloosa
by Donna Doud
The AraAppaloosa is a horse of Appaloosa and Arabian breeding. They can
be 1/2 Appaloosa and 1/2 Arabian or just have a smaller or larger percentage
of Arabian from their ancestors. They are more finely built than the Quarter
stock type Appaloosa. They are built like the Arabian.
The AraAppaloosa comes in almost as wide variety of colors and
patterns
as the Appaloosas. They can be solid or have the color of the Appaloosas,
with the Appaloosa characteristics, such as striped hooves, sclera around
the eyes, and skin mottling. They also have the combined stamina ,
soundness and intelligence of 2 breeds developed individually specifically
for those qualities . They are also family oriented, spirited, and also have
the Appaloosa disposition. They are a joy to be around with, and a joy to
work with. Arabians were the chosen breed ( by Claude ) to try to bring the
Appaloosa back to the body type that the Appaloosa Club's founder,, Claude
Thompson remembered seeing as a youth. Arabians are generally recognized as
being the oldest pure breed in the world .
As a matter of record, several Appaloosas that were registered at the start
of the Appaloosa Horse Club were 1/2 Arabians so if you own an Appaloosa you
may in fact already own an AraAppaloosa and not even know it. One of these
foundation Appaloosas was Painter III F 8, the sire of Painter's Marvel F
47 who was the dam to Red Eagle F 209 . Red Eagle himself was sired by an
Arabian, which made Red Eagle 3/4 Arabian, or an AraAppaloosa.
Thought of today as a new breed by many, the AraAppaloosa could very well be
as old as the Arabian itself as cave paintings and old Chinese art work show
pictures of spotted horses.
The registry for the AraAppaloosa is AraAppaloosa Foundation &
Breeders'
International (AAFBI). They can tell you how much Arabian blood is needed to
qualify for their registry. The AraAppaloosa can usually also be registered
with the Appaloosa Horse Club, Inc. (ApHC) provided it meets their
requirements, and International Arabian Horse Association (IAHA) as long as
one parent is registered with the Arabian Horse Registry of America. The
IAHA is for half Arabians.
Quick on their feet, sound of mind with hearts of gold, the AraAppaloosa is
used for Endurance Competitive trail rides, games horses, such as barrels,
poles, etc. as well as sensible family pets. They also do well as cattle and
reining horses. They can be shown in Arabian shows in the IAHA classes. Some
of their sweepstakes are awesome !!!!
Jennifer Willison, Maureen Sullivan, and I moderate the AraAppaloosa
egroup. Our group is just a little over a year old; we have grown a lot
since we have started it. Our group now has 62 members and it's the only
online AraAppaloosa group we know of. We didn't realize how much interest
there was in the AraAppaloosa till we started this.
I want to thank Lisa Banks, Pam Graham, Connie Hunter, and Janet Spears
for helping me put this article together.
